Deep Work in the Age of AI
June 2, 2026 · 1 min read · ZeroZenit
AI removes friction from shallow tasks. That makes protected, undistracted attention rarer and more valuable, not less.
Why attention became the scarce resource
When machines handle the routine, the bottleneck shifts to the one thing they can't do for you: sustained, undistracted thought. The paradox of better tools is that they raise the value of the human work only you can do.
Designing a deep-work block
Pick the time before the day fills up
Reserve a fixed block — ideally first thing — and treat it as an appointment you can't move.
Remove the exits
Close the tabs, silence the phone, and give the block a single concrete output.
Measuring honestly
Track only two numbers: minutes of true focus and whether you shipped the one output. Everything else is vanity.
A note on AI as a collaborator
Used well, AI clears the shallow work so your deep block starts sooner. Used poorly, it becomes one more thing to check. The difference is intention.
